She who is serving as president of University of South Florida for 9th year since May, 2000 is a power woman of American educational circles representing about 4,000 American universities at this time. She who had also received honorary doctorate degree from Yeungnam University in Feb, 2006 had visited the university again. The reason is to discuss on extending dispatching scale of Yeungnam University\'s oversea campuses that are being installed and operated for 3rd year as well as promotion of exchange between universities. Yeungnam University has installed an oversea campus at the University of South Florida for the first time in our country in 2007 and dispatched a total of 93 enrolled students until this year. University of South Florida has broken the custom of demanding expensive tuition reaching up to three or four times of the local students to foreigners and providing tuition and dormitory costs of equivalent standard as local students to Yeungnam University students. Yeungnam University has categorized the programs to 1 semester language training, 1 semester language training & 1 semester regular course and 2 semester regular course to provide the opportunity of advancing into oversea campus by having students select appropriate program for their own standard and necessity. Especially since 2008, the exchange between medical schools became active to carry out a joint promotion of clinical practice and oversea internship such as 10 medical students from Yeungnam University being dispatched to the University of South Florida last year. To this, president Gensaft said that \"let the two universities make an effort together to provide as much opportunity as possible for the students to understand different perspectives and values from each other as well as communicating with other countries by extending oversea campus and exchange program\" by saying that \"Yeungnam University students are most excellent among many foreign students\" at the opportunity of meeting president Lee, Hyo-Soo of Yeungnam University. To this, president Lee, Hyo-Soo responded that \"I hope we would become partners in contributing for the future of human race by giving concern on global problems such as the field of green, culture, medical and biotechnology together\" by saying that \"the mission given to universities throughout the world at this time is to raise glocal talents pursuing globalization and localization at the same time.\" Meanwhile, the University of South Florida is 9th largest university in the United States which is proud of 46,000 enrolled students and 4 campuses. Especially, it had recently been assessed as Very High Research University by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as it had been acknowledged for superb research performance in the field of medicine and biotechnology such as being designated as a center performing a leading role in dementia related researches and treatments including Alzheimer, Parkinson and Huntington.

<BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> The launch of first \'personalized medicine hi-tech convergence research group’ in the country Leading popularization of highest class medical services, presenting as strategic project of Daegu Sinseo Hi-Tech Complex [2009-9-14] Yeungnam University (president Lee, Hyo-Soo) opens up the \"Age of Personalized Medicine\" Recently, Yeungnam University has launched the first \'personalized medicine hi-tech convergence research group’ in the country, settled the medical service of highest class standard in our country at an early stage and expressed that it would provide active support for promotion of successful project for Daegu Sinseo Hi-Tech Medical Complex. The research team with Professor Park, Yong-Ha of School of Biotechnology, consists of a large number of about 50 professors in BT, NT and IT fields such as Professor Kim, Jung-Ae of College of Pharmacy, Professor Chang, Byung-Ik of College of Medicine, Professor Ju, Sang-Woo of College of Engineering and Professor Moon, Yong-Sun of College of Natural Resources. These people will get to perform a high tech convergence research systematically to provide personalized medical services by pulling down a barrier between academics. \'Personalized Medicine\' means preventing and treating diseases according to different biological characteristics of each individual patient and expects to become a megatrend of future medical industry. Recently, a research & development enabling more precise prediction, prevention and treatment of diseases is being performed by analyzing and utilizing individual genetic information. The research of personalized medicine being performed throughout the entire field of biotechnology and medical science including molecular diagnosis, target treatment, personalized medication and precision medicine, etc enables us to manage patients in general by predicting diseases, finding out high risk categories in advance and calculating each individual disease risks. Not only that, but it is expected to bring a landmark change of paradigm where even the prediction of disease types by descendants becomes possible. For an example, Macrogen has recently signed an agreement for promoting development of genome analysis service and personalized medicines with Boryung Pharmaceutical Group to release \'G-Scanning\' as the first product of joint business. This service lets us know the information on diseases such as mental retardation, autism, epilepsy, learning disability and various forms of rare diseases from genome abnormality using the screening test method of scanning and analyzing the genome parts of about 1,440 places of chromosome in our entire body. The decoded information is stored for 10 years if desired by consumer and the genetic information of related genome can be updated. Also by referring to individual genetic data, the times when most effective medicine for each individual is prescribed and even new drugs considering unique genetic characteristics of each race are developed will come within several years. For this, the Director of research team Park, Yong-Ha (50) has anticipated that \"if the \'Korean style\' personalized medicine industry applying hi-tech convergence technology of BT, IT and NT based on the tradition of Sasang Constitutional Medicine develops centered on Sinseo Hi-Tech Complex, it would become a great driver for improving national competitiveness of Republic of Korea as well as local areas\" by saying that \"As much as the coming of \'the age of personalized medicine\' is being predicted by specialists between 2011 to 2020, the domestic medical industry would also have to move quickly to prepare for the expanding trend of global medical market. Accordingly, our research team will lead in the advancement of medical welfare in which all citizens are able to use highest quality medical services without any cost burden by lowering the current personal genetic information analysis cost of 300,000 US$ level to 1,000 US$ level within several years and finally to 100 US$ level by establishing a strong research network with highest specialists in domestic and foreign BT/IT/NT fields while especially concentrating all capabilities on university level such as forming a basis for enterprise support and securing research activity funds.

The vehicles that are simply participating must satisfy strict manufacturing regulations such as attaching an engine of 610cc or less, the wheel 8mm or bigger, inner diameter of induction pipe 20mm or less, distance between axle 1,525mm or les and attaching working brakes on all four wheels, etc. In the competition of this year, 80 teams from a total of 8 countries including Korea, Japan, China, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Iran and Germany, etc will be participating. Among them \'YUSAE\' of Yeungnam University is the only Korean team. So the students have a whole new determination. Although they have experience of participating several times in the United States and England already, it is their first time in Japan and because of the ambition to firm up the position of \'Korea\', the powerful automotive country representing Asia, on the Japanese land. To make this possible, 16 YUSAE team members had to stay up nights for last one year in order to make the automobile with best performance. After benchmarking the vehicles of foreign teams met during the world contests until now and the their participation experience, they can make a maximum speed of 190km/h and especially improved durability by matching up each component well. They also devoted a special care on vehicle\'s design to create a vehicle with strong impression having \'great white shark\' design as concept by the hands of YUSAE team members 100%. Now these people will leave for Shizuoka, Japan departing from Incheon Airport on the 8th. The participating vehicle with a plate \'no. 30\' was already shipped to Japan on 2nd. The YUSAE who will be arriving at the Shizuoka Airport, Japan on the 8th will be inspecting the vehicle for the last time and consolidate their determination of having a decisive battle after moving to the race course immediately after taking over the vehicle. The official competition is held for 4 days with design report presentation, static inspection (inspection of structural stability of vehicle) and dynamic inspection (acceleration power, rotation power, braking power, short distance race, durability race and fuel economy), etc until 9th to 12th to test the ability of world\'s automotive engineering students in general. The YUSAE team manager Han, Jung-Hoon (23, grade 3 of School of Mechanical Engineering) who says \"the last 1 year devoted in preparing for the competition was the time to test our ability, the passion/endurance toward automobiles and the teamwork by ourselves\" said that \"Especially under the situation which is same as actual match for last one month, we have performed preliminary testing to finally reinspect the performance of vehicle and continued to task of making improvements on discovered problems. Although we had a lot of hard time physically during the process, we endured by thinking about the people who believed in us and helped us. Most of all, as much as we are participating in the Japanese competition for the first time, we\'ll run harder on our country\'s honor.\" Professor Hwang, Pyeong (54, School of Mechanical Engineering) who is guiding the \'YUSAE\' team for 10th year said that \"participating in world competition is the opportunity to apply engineering theory learned in the classroom in the actual scene. Especially, we are gaining the effect of killing three or four birds with one stone such as raising the business mind that the engineering students are lacking in and as raising international sense by preparing design report and presentations in English while looking for sponsors.\" On the other hand, YUSAE has acquired certification from SAE for the first time in our country in 1997, attempted manufacture of vehicle for formula competition in 2004 to place 41st in overall score among 80 participating teams in the England competition participated for the first time and showing off the skills of Korean university students on the international stage such as placing in top 40 in overall ranking among about 110 participating teams also in the English competition of 2007 and 2008.

The students of Yeungnam University are leaving for oversea volunteer service in order to use the vacation as a period of opportunity to grow as global citizens, not a period to be free from learning. <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_004269083044505756 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2009-12-21_09-06-58_495.jpg\" target=_blank> Yeungnam University oversea volunteer group leaving to plant life at the Kubuqi Desert of Neimenggu The Kubuqi Desert located in Neimenggu is a source area of yellow dust that heavily covers the sky of Northeast Asia, each spring. In this place where tree shade to avoid the scorching sun of midsummer going up to 40 degrees celsius is nowhere to be found, the Yeungnam University oversea volunteer group will launch into cultivating a forest from July 1st to 15th. Although they cannot plant trees directly because it is not a planting period, there is a lot of work waiting for hands of these people such as watering trees that are already planted, building protective fence around trees, moving the fallen trees, repairing tubular well and taking care of young plants. Besides, Yeungnam University students are planning to play the roles of publicity ambassadors to introduce Korean culture along with services taking efforts such as helping with street cleanup, harvesting field crops like wheat‧corn or teaching Korean to Chinese children while presenting enjoyable time to elders by visiting local asylum for the aged. Choi, Won-Jung (22, School of Economics and Finance, Senior) who is in charge as a team manager of Kubuqi Desert oversea volunteer group said \"Although it would be nice to make up for insufficient studies or prepare for employment during vacation, I think it is more important to mature one\'s character using the opportunity to serve for the human race and concern about the global problems\" and promised that \"although I wouldn\'t be able to communicate well and there will be many inconveniences, I\'ll come back even healthier after serving with enjoyable heart as much as it is an opportunity to contribute for the global people and future as well as my own family and myself.\" Vacation Is Opportunity To Grow As \'Global Citizen\' Yeungnam University, Dispatches 80 Oversea Volunteers to China‧Philippines Although it is clear that they will have a hard time in poor environment, the competitive rate of Yeungnam University oversea volunteer group screening process held in April was 4 to 1. The final successful candidates could be chosen only after in-depth interview because about 320 people had gathered for recruiting 80 volunteers to be dispatched to a total of 4 areas such as Neimenggu and Harbin of China or Batankas and Iloilo of Philippines. While 80 students selected like this had received volunteer service training such as CPR, first-aid treatment, taekwondo lecture and dance lecture from the invited professional instructors since May, they prepared for oversea volunteer service by doing volunteer activities after visiting nearby social welfare facilities directly every Saturday. These students who had launching ceremony at Yeungnam University museum auditorium on June 6 will be departing to their service area in the morning of July 1. The Dean of Office of Student Affairs Ryu, Ho-Sang said that \"I hope the students would be able to gain knowledge and virtue as global citizens through oversea volunteer service\" by saying that \"there are many university students who are not able to have spare time even during vacations due to serious unemployment these days. But it is necessary to build up an insight and experience to see the world with greater perspective during university years and not just concentrated on the credits or English scores that they are faced with. That\'s because 21st century requires a talent that possesses symbiotic rather than competitive mind.\" Continued Deposit of Supporting Goods by Local Enterprises The local enterprises are also giving a hand of support to the oversea volunteer service of Yeungnam University. In the afternoon of 29th, the Gyeongbuk branch of Kogas, Daw Asset Management, Seoheung ENG and Fursys Artist OPC had visited Yeungnam University to deliver stationery including pencils, notebooks, ball point pens and crayons and medical products equivalent to 2,000 US $ in market price asking them to be used for oversea volunteer service activity. In the delivery ceremony of this day, the business support team manager Keum, Kyo-Ha of Kogas Gyeongbuk branch said that \"I\'m very proud of Yeungnam University students who are leaving for volunteer activity to an oversea inland by giving up their vacation\" by saying that \"Most companies consider volunteer work experience as very important factors while hiring new employees these days. That\'s because they believe a person who can serve for others has basic nature of being able to dedicate for the company.\" For this, the dean Ryu, Ho-Sang said that \"Thank you very much for timely support of stationeries that we really need\" by saying \"The San Hernimo village of Iloilo in Philippines among this volunteer activity areas is a region that especially needs a helping hand, According to the report from preliminary visit, most students didn\'t have pencils and notebooks. The primary school for Korean ethnicity where Harbin team of China will perform volunteer activity was also in a difficult situation.\" Meanwhile, Yeungnam University has been dispatching oversea volunteer groups to places like China, Mongolia, Uzbekistan and Southeast Asia since winter vacation of 2001. The Yeungnam University oversea volunteer activity where about 1,400 students participate until this summer vacation is becoming an opportunity for each student to mature in their character while playing a great role in private diplomacy of raising external image of the Republic of Korea as a nation.
